If youre looking for some fun French festivities, here are a few spring and summer holidays to celebrate. 1) Heure dété  Daylight Savings Time Daylight savings time isnt really a holiday, but it is something to which everyone in France must pay attention, just as we do in the United States. Frances daylight savings time change also occurs on a Sunday, but not the same Sunday as in the United States. Usually, we Americans turn our clocks forward about a week before the French do. As a result, for about a week every spring, the time difference between the two countries diminishes from eight hours to seven. 2) Pâques Easter Easter is traditionally a religious holiday which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. Though France like the United States has gradually become more diverse and secular over the years, France is traditionally a Catholic country. Even after many French Revolutionaries criticized the Catholic Church for corruption at the end of the 18th century, Napoleon brought it back in the early 1800s. In 1980, 80% of the French population identified as Catholic. Today, many statistics put the number at a similar percentage, but the number who actually go to church has decreased and religious diversity, as well as the number of religiously-unaffiliated people, is rising. Even so, just as in the US where many Americans may celebrate Christmas and Easter without attending church, many French do the same. 3)  La  Fête  de lAscension Ascension Day La Fête de lAscension (Ascension Day) is also a traditionally Christian holiday, but in France, it is also a public holiday. It celebrates the day Jesus ascended to heaven, forty days after rising from the dead. Like Easter, its roots (naturally) come from Frances Catholic past. Regardless of religious affiliation, however, most French people appreciate the day off! 4) La Fête du Travail Labor Day Labor Day in the United States doesnt come until September. In France, however, it occurs in May, the same month we celebrate Memorial Day. But while we celebrate Memorial Day towards the end of the month, the French celebrate Labor Day at the beginning â€" on May 1st. 5) La Fête Nationale Bastille Day We celebrate our independence day on the 4th of July. The French celebrate theirs 10 days later on the 14th of July, better known as Bastille Day. On that day in 1789, French revolutionaries, mostly from French societys lower classes, stormed the Bastille a fortress and prison in Paris. For revolutionaries, it stood for the nobility and clergys hypocrisy and corruption, as the French clergy and nobility strongly influenced government of the day. Although many French were inspired by Americas revolution, their revolutions bloodiness shocked many Americans and other Europeans. Still, it set France on a zig-zag course between monarchy and representative government, finally ending with the forced abdication of its last king, Charles Philip I, in 1848. Due to a few additional interruptions stemming from wars with (and invasions from) neighboring countries, France is now in its 5th republic, which began with President Charles de Gaulle following World War II. If youre studying French in the US, look out for opportunities to celebrate with the French community in your area, especially on Bastille Day. Should I Go to Fullerton College Diana is a current senior at Fullerton College. She is majoring in criminal justice, and specializes in Spanish tutoring, phonics tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at Fullerton College: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Diana: Fullerton College is situated in an urban area. Students use bikes, skateboards, buses, and cars to get around campus. I always feel safe on campus, regardless of the time of day or night. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Diana:The professors' office hours are typically indicated at the beginning of the year in the syllabus. Most of them let you visit their hours whenever, though, as long as you let them know a day or so in advance that you will be coming in for help. Even online professors are very accessible to students. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Diana:The dining options on campus are somewhat on the fast food side, but still provide a variety of options for students. If students venture into town, there are many other restaurants for students to enjoy. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Diana:My major, criminal justice, is well supported. Other majors are as well, including cosmetology, marketing, and the mechanical industry. I fell in love with criminal justice at a very young age, and when I took my first class in the department, I knew it was the right path for me. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Diana:Its fairly easy to make friends on campus. There are many organizations students can get involved in on campus to meet others. Greek life is not very present at Fullerton. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Diana:The Career Center staff are very helpful. They are there to give students advice and assistance with the job search, as well as review resumes. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Diana:The library and study spaces are great on campus. They get busy around finals week, but are generally very inviting spaces for students to study in. Describe the surrounding town. Diana:Disneyland is very close to Fullertons campus. Additionally, there are places to eat, watch movies, and go shopping near campus. Its a very nice area to attend school; theres always something fun going on. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Diana:I typically take early-morning classes, so the sizes of my classes are fairly small. I love the intimacy of the smaller-sized classes. However, I do know that there are larger lecture courses offered on campus as well. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Diana:I have loved every class, even the ones I struggled with. If I had to choose one of my favorites, I would choose my CSI class. My dog and cat are both great at telling me when they need to go outside, when theyre hungry, and when theyre angry. My cat is especially great at telling me shes angry. She usually does it by running between my legs while Im going down the stairs. Active Listening Skills BobbiM Apr 18, 2014 Listen. Really listen and youll learn a lot in your classes! Try not to daydream too much. Its not only important to know how you take and organize your notes, but also the kinds of information you should include. Of course, the kinds of information you should put in your notes vary from class to class. Listen for the following cues that your professor may give as a way of figuring out what is important to note: -Lists. Lists of things begin with cues such as There were three major reasons why President Johnson committed more troops to Vietnam. Short-term memory has five characteristics. Anytime you hear a number followed by several factors, stages, characteristics, etc., make sure you write the number of things along with the explanation. -Cause and effect. When you hear your professor discuss causes an effects, be sure to write it down. Cause/effect cues are common in history and political science. For example, there might be an event that caused a president to make a certain decision and this decision, in turn, had numerous effects on other events and decisions. In science, cause/effect can deal with concepts such as diseases or the good chain. -Definitions. Perhaps one of the most frequent types if information your professor will give in a lecture is definitions. Your professor might cue you by saying something as basic as covalent bond can be defined as. Its a good idea to get definitions written down in your notes precisely. If you only get down a portion of a definition or arent sure that you have it exactly right, check your text or with your professor as soon after class as possible. -Examples. Definitions are quite frequently followed by examples. Yet often, students will see example time as an occasion to tune out. But examples discussed in class make for prime test questions. If you have to choose, we believe its actually more important to get examples in your notes than it is definitions (you can get the definitions from your textbook). -Extended comments. When the professor spends a lot of time explaining something, you can be sure that it is important information. Try to stay connected with the lecturer during extended comments and take down as much of the information as possible. Essay, short answer, and higher-level multiple-choice items often come from these extended comments. -Superlatives. Anytime a professor uses words such as most important, or best explanation, least influential, be sure to write it down. For example, there may be many explanations for how memory works, but your psychology professor might believe that one explanation is the best. There are the kinds of things professors love to ask about on exams. -Voice or volume change. When professors think something is important or they want to stress it, they generally speak louder and slower. A change in the voice can be a clear indication that something important is being said. -Process notes. Process notes consist of information the professor gives about tests, how to study, when study or review sessions are held, how to think about the information, or how he wants an essay structured. They can also include clues about what information might be on the exam. Process notes often come right at the beginning of class, before some students are ready to take notes, or at the end of class, when some students are packed up and ready to leave. Becoming an active listener takes time, especially for classes in which you have little interest. Its not too difficult to stay connected with the lecturer in classes that you like or in classes where you have a professor who is dynamic. Its much more difficult in those courses that are, in some way, less appealing. But try to think about the bigger picture. If you are an active listener and take organized notes for the entire class period, studying and learning the course material will be a much easier task. This research unveils an increasing trend towards one-on-one tutoring spurred due to of the effects of the recent economic downturn. Also, nearly 3 out of 5 students prefer private tutoring over their teachers in public schools and colleges. In 2006 Tutorz conducted a survey among 50 students at the University of California Irvine campus. 45% of the interviewed students reported having received tutoring sessions at least once a term. When Tutorz repeated this study in May 2011, this percentage increased to 55% a testimony of the ever increasing importance of tutoring. Students feel energetic and motivated through homeschooling. Students are happy when they solve physics and math problems correctly in exams. They ultimately pin point private tutoring as reason for this. A whopping 77% of higher education students face difficulty in understanding math concepts. This widens math tutoring opportunities. Nearly 72% of students with tutoring help can improve their grades in just 10 hours of one-to-one help. Math, science, reading are subjects which are most requested for private tutoring. Similarly private tutors for teaching Spanish, Chinese languages are more in demand. Conclusion Tutoring services play an increasing role of in students education. Tutoring can close the gap between students’ needs and a schools shortcomings. Apart from teaching, parents choose private tutoring option to motivate their children in homeschooling, to cultivate good habits, and get them prepared for entering the work field.
